Annam Vietnamese cUISINE CULTURAL BACKGROUND

AGRICULTURAL BEGINNINGS
The core of Vietnamese cuisine, including street food, is tied to the rice-based agricultural traditions of the Red River Delta in the north and the Mekong Delta in the south. Rice, noodles, and vegetables are staples in many street dishes.

CHINESE INFLUENCE

China ruled Vietnam for over a thousand years (111BC to 938 AD). This period left a lasting imprint on Vietnamese cuisine,especially in the north,where dishes like phở, a noodle soup, were influenced by Chinese broths and noodle making techniques.

FRENCH COLONIZATION

French colonization in the 19th and 20th centuries added new layers to Vietnamese street food, particularly with the introduction of the baguette (which became "bánh mì"), coffee, and other Western-style foods that were later adapted into local.

OTHER CULTURAL INFLUENCES
